Overview
The Moors were a genetic mixture of Arabs and Berbers who came from a region of North Africa that is present day Morocco. In the 7th century, they occupied large areas of Portugal and Spain, called Al-Andalus. Although their religion was Islam, they were tolerant of their non-Muslim subjects, Jews and Christians, allowing freedom of worship, observance of civil laws and certain land rights. The Moorish occupation of Spain is considered a “golden era” in which learning, culture and trade flourished. In 1492, after several centuries of instability and invasion, the Christians expelled the Moors and Jews from Spain. They fled back to their ancestral homes in North Africa bringing with them their more advanced culture. The strong influence of the Moors or Andalusians can be seen in the towns and villages primarily in the north of Morocco. This special tour takes you along the routes of the Moors in Morocco and carries your imagination back to their ancient time.
